2. Introduction & Motivation

Non-Axiomatic Logic (NAL) and Probabilistic Logic Networks (PLN) represent two of the most developed frameworks for reasoning under uncertainty in artificial general intelligence research. Both operate on truth-valued statements, both support multiple inference types, and both aim to handle the open-world assumption where evidence is perpetually insufficient. Yet despite these shared goals, no formal protocol exists for combining them in a single reasoning architecture.

This gap matters now for three reasons:

Shared substrate availability. The Hyperon/MeTTa platform provides a common execution environment where NAL inference (via the `|-` operator) and PLN inference (via the `|~` operator) can coexist, sharing belief states through a unified atomspace. This eliminates the integration tax that previously made hybrid approaches impractical.

Theoretical convergence. Goertzel's analysis of PLN and NARS power metrics demonstrates that under conditions of high uncertainty — precisely the conditions most relevant to real-world AGI applications — the two frameworks produce nearly identical confidence assessments. This suggests they are not competing alternatives but complementary perspectives on the same underlying problem.

Practical demand. Our experience across 3,000+ operational cycles of an autonomous MeTTa-based agent reveals recurring patterns where neither NAL nor PLN alone produces satisfactory results, but their combination does. Compliance checking requires NAL's deductive classification and PLN's abductive gap analysis. Competitive intelligence requires NAL's inheritance chains and PLN's implication-based prediction.

This paper proposes a bidirectional inference pattern — classify forward with NAL, explain backward with PLN, revise shared beliefs, repeat — and validates it empirically against single-engine baselines. We restrict scope to deduction, abduction, and revision, identifying temporal reasoning and analogy as future work.

3. Background: NAL and PLN Separately

3.1 Non-Axiomatic Logic (NAL)

NAL, developed by Pei Wang, models reasoning under the Assumption of Insufficient Knowledge and Resources (AIKR). Statements carry truth values (f, c) where frequency f represents the proportion of positive evidence and confidence c reflects the amount of evidence relative to a horizon parameter. The revision rule merges independent evidence sources, monotonically increasing confidence — a property critical for longitudinal belief management.

NAL supports inheritance (`-->`), similarity (`<->`), implication (`==>`), and their compound forms. Deduction, induction, abduction, and analogy are defined as inference rules with truth-value functions derived from term logic. In MeTTa, NAL inference is invoked via:

3.2 Probabilistic Logic Networks (PLN)

Despite theoretical alignment, no published work specifies how to route inference between NAL and PLN, how to translate truth values bidirectionally, or how revision should operate on beliefs produced by different engines. This paper addresses that gap.

4. Technical Approach: Bidirectional Hybrid Inference

4.1 Architecture Overview

Our hybrid architecture treats NAL and PLN as complementary inference engines sharing a unified MeTTa atomspace. The core pattern is:

1. NAL Forward Pass — Deductively classify the input using inheritance chains

6. Discussion & Future Work

The bidirectional pattern demonstrated here — NAL forward classification, PLN backward explanation, shared revision — suggests a general design principle for multi-engine reasoning systems: let each engine do what it does best, and let revision unify their outputs. This avoids the forced-choice problem that has historically framed NAL and PLN as competitors rather than collaborators.

The compliance pipeline validates this at scale. Neither engine alone produced the full picture: NAL classified risk levels but could not identify why gaps existed; PLN identified gaps but could not place them in a regulatory classification hierarchy. The combination was genuinely greater than the sum.

6.2 Confidence Decay as a Feature

Our multi-hop experiments reveal that NAL's multiplicative confidence decay (c^n for n hops at s=1.0) is not a bug but a principled epistemic safeguard. After 3-4 hops, confidence drops below 0.3, naturally preventing runaway inference chains. This self-limiting behavior is absent in systems that propagate certainty without decay. The practical ceiling of ~3 reliable hops matches human intuitions about inferential distance.

Revision from independent evidence at intermediate nodes can rescue deep chains — we demonstrated a 41% confidence boost via dual-instance revision. This suggests architectures should invest in evidence breadth (multiple independent sources) rather than inference depth (longer chains).

6.3 Limitations

Several constraints bound our findings:

- Parser limitations: MeTTa's current parser cannot reliably handle nested inheritance inside implication, restricting some compound inference patterns

- No analogy rule: NAL analogy is not yet implemented in MeTTa, removing one of NAL's most powerful inference types

- Ad-hoc routing: Our engine selection heuristic is hand-coded; a learned router would be more principled

- Single-agent validation: All results come from one autonomous agent (MeTTaClaw); multi-agent validation remains future work

6.4 Future Directions

7. Conclusion

We have presented and empirically validated a bidirectional hybrid reasoning pattern that combines NAL deduction with PLN abduction on a shared MeTTa atomspace. Our key findings are:

These results, validated across 3,000+ operational cycles of an autonomous MeTTa-based agent, suggest that the future of uncertain reasoning in AGI lies not in choosing between NAL and PLN but in combining them systematically. The MeTTa platform makes this combination practical today.
