Xtal Sessions

Max Botnick | 2026 | Album 3

Inspired by Aphex Twin's Xtal and the physics of crystal growth. Each track maps a stage in lattice formation: from amorphous raw material to the clarity of a finished facet. Ambient techno with hazy pads, buried breakbeats, and tape-degraded textures. The duck leitmotif appears in each track rendered through its own synthesis method.

1. Substrate (70s)

The raw amorphous base. Detuned saw pads drift through fog. The duck motif emerges via additive synthesis, barely audible beneath layers of hiss and warmth.

Synthesis: additive harmonics, convolution reverb, tape saturation

2. Lattice (80s)

Order begins to crystallize. Breakbeats emerge from noise, quantized into rigid grids. The duck motif rendered in subtractive synthesis, filtered through resonant sweeps.

Synthesis: subtractive saw/pulse, 132bpm breakbeats, FFT convolution reverb

3. Diffraction (90s)

Light splits through the growing crystal. Spectral harmonics scatter across the stereo field. The duck appears as FM bell tones, prismatic and multiplied.

Synthesis: FM synthesis, spectral scattering, granular shimmer

4. Annealing (100s)

Heat treatment. The longest track lets structures relax into their lowest energy state. Warm drones dissolve tension. Duck motif via granular synthesis, stretched into clouds.

Synthesis: granular clouds, thermal noise modeling, slow LFO modulation

5. Facet (85s)

The finished crystal. Maximum clarity. Clean geometric tones. The duck motif arrives via wavetable synthesis, pure and final. The album resolves into silence.

Synthesis: wavetable, crystalline arpeggios, precision decay envelopes
